Thornhill is a city of over 100,000 people on the northern border of Toronto. It was founded in 1794 and by 1820 had a sawmill, a tannery and a gristmill. Benjamin Thorne, owner of the gristmill, inspired the name Thorne’s Mills which later became Thornhill.
Thornhill has grown steadily, particularly during the 1980s when large housing developments were built and the “anchor tenant” philosophy brought in residential developers and commercial concerns. Thornhill now an uptown village called the Thornhill Town Centre and the Promenade Shopping Centre. Thornhill Woods and Upper Thornhill Estates, residential developments, lie to the north beyond but conveniently close to shopping centers and commercial development. With dozens of public, private, religious and ethnically cultural schools Thornhill is a diverse community full of interesting things to do and a population that is welcoming and friendly.
Anne Murray, Robert Goulet, Dan Shulman, Daniel Spivak, Corey Haim and hockey player Michael Henrich are just a few of many famous natives of Thornhill.
