Whether you are having major renovations done on your home or just a small home repair you should always use caution when using a contractor who works for cash. It could possibly be that the contractor wants to work for cash so they don't have taxes taken directly out of their paycheck but then again there could be major issues when working with a contractor who requires cash for payment.

As a homeowner you often spend a lot of money making changes and repairs to your home and by using caution when using a contractor who works for cash will help to protect you in the long run. Many companies will require an upfront deposit which will be deducted from the final contractor bill once the repairs or changes are complete. You should always ask for references and check their certification and licenses to ensure they are indeed licensed to do the job that you are hiring for. Unfortunately there are many companies and individuals out there who will scam homeowners out of money by asking for a cash deposit upfront and then disappearing when it's time to do the job.

One reason to be caution when using a contractor who works for cash is that if they are paid upfront and then the job is not satisfactory they may disappear when changes or further repairs are needed. You should only make a cash deposit upfront if you are able to verify that the contractor is indeed reputable and will complete the job to your requirements. If you do decide to pay the contractor with cash you should only choose to do so in instalments or once the job is complete.

You should always check for leaks or other unsatisfactory mistakes that are often made by contractors who don't take their job seriously or plan on scamming you out of your money. You should always use caution when using a contractor who works for cash. You should also verify that the contractor has some type of insurance or workers compensation in place just in case any type of injury occurs while they are on the job. If a contractor gets hurt while on your property there is a chance that they may choose to sue you and the Ministry of Labour can fine you thousands of dollars. So by taking the time to research different contractors you will be able to make an informed decision on what company or individual will work best for your budget and needs.

If you are one of the many individuals who are looking at repairing or need an entirely new roof you should upgrade your roof with architectural shingles. It can be costly to repair your roof so by using architectural shingles you will save yourself a ton of money in the long run. There are many benefits from using these kinds of shingles because they are durable and will last a lot longer than many other types of shingles. Since most companies offer a 10 & 30 year warranty on the shingles you will have the peace of mind that you will be protected whether they show wear and tear or become damaged due to a storm.

There are many key features that you will benefit from when deciding to upgrade your roof with architectural shingles. The price is usually much lower than tile, wood or metal roofing materials so you are getting a better material at only half the price. Whether you choose to hire a contractor or to put on the new architectural shingles yourself the job can be done fairly quickly. They are easy to install so if you are on a budget you can actually do the job without a contractor.

As a homeowner you may want to upgrade your roof with architectural shingles especially if you are looking for something that will give you protection and peace of mind knowing that your roof is will be covered by a many year warranty. Due to the thickness of the shingles they are able to withstand longer than normal shingles which is why many manufacturers are now offering lifetime warranty. You can often purchase these in 3 dimensional tiles in various styles so making your roof stylish and durable can be done with ease.

One of the biggest perks that you will benefit from when you upgrade your roof with architectural shingles is the money that will be saved. You will save money upfront by the total price of the architectural shingles and then again due to the length of time that they will last. Unlike many other types of shingles that require you to replace them every few years these are durable and will last you many years to come. Home repairs can be costly and with one less thing to worry about you can save and spend your money more efficiently.

There are many different reasons why you may require roof inspections and consulting. The most common reason is that you are currently having issues with your roof such as leaking or missing shingles and you need a consultation on how to repair it or to find out how much it will cost to replace all together. Even if you aren't noticing immediate damage to your roof its often recommended that you get you consider roof inspections and consulting at least every couple of years.

By checking your roof regularly you can often have minor problems repaired fairly cheap and help to avoid major problems in the future. Obviously no roof will last forever but with many of the materials that are being made manufactured they will last for 30 & 40 years before you will have to repair or replace it. Roof inspections and consulting is often required when you are buying or selling a home to ensure that the new buyers will not be walking into a major repair without warning. If you are buying a home you should always have a complete inspection of the home including the roof. Since an entire replacement of the roof can be very costly you want to know ahead of time if there are any existing problems.

Many sellers will not tell the buyers of any current problems with the home if they hope to get by with it. It could be possible that the current owners aren't actually aware of any major issues so before buying a home always have roof inspections and consulting done. Even if you don't mind repairing or replacing the roof at least you will have notice of it ahead of time and can make an informed decision on what is best for you. Having money set aside for any future repairs to your roof should be something that you should consider doing whether you already own your home or looking to buy.

There are many different types of roofing material available so when scheduling your roof inspections and consulting make sure that the contractor explains what all of your options are. Depending on the condition of your roof it may be best to go with an entirely new roof instead of wasting money on repairs that will only last for a short period of time. Since every situation is different it's always best to get the opinion and results from a professional.

There a many styles of shingles when it comes to roofing.  While most of us don’t give our roof a second (or even a first!) thought, we all notice roofs that are unattractive.  A beautiful roof adds to a house’s curb appeal as well as its value.

The most common roofing material is asphalt shingles and they can be found on nearly 80% of all houses in North America.  They are inexpensive but they need the most maintenance.  On the other hand, they are easy to repair, fire resistant and come in many colors.  You can find asphalt roofing shingles in many different shapes, too, from square to diamond shaped.  One drawback of asphalt shingles is that they are prone to mold and moss, especially in humid climates.

One style of roof shingle that is very popular is concrete roof tiles.  These are the type of shingles you see on homes in the American Southwest or along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.  They are used on mission and prairie style homes, too.  Concrete roof shingles are tough, good looking and durable; a roof with these shingles is often called a tile roof.    You can get them in more than a dozen different colors to complement your home.  These shingles are fireproof, non-combustible and easy to maintain.  They resist winds more than 150 MPH and the strongest hail and rain.  Concrete roof shingles are energy efficient and most companies warranty them for 50 years.

Another attractive style of roofing is wood shingles, also called “shake” shingles.  They are lightweight and easy to install but their use has diminished due to their combustible nature. They have a natural beauty that’s hard to duplicate and as they age they become a beautiful weathered gray color.  However, they do tend to rot, split, grow mold and mildew in humid climates and will dry out and get brittle in arid zones.  Wood shingles are beautiful, are good insulators and are easy to repair or replace.

Roofs that Fail

Kevin

Our roof isn’t something that we think of often.  In fact, we rarely even look at our roofs and usually only become aware of them when we discover a leak in our ceilings.  Advanced Roofing Ontario offers these helpful signs of a failing roof in order to help you save yourself a lot of trouble and expense.

If your roof is over ten years old there are telltale signs you can look for to spot problems before they damage your home and your wallet.  Most of those signs are obvious if you glance up at your roof at least once a month.  Algae is very common in humid, warm climates and appears as dark streaks on the shingles.  It can impair the integrity of your roof and damage the shingles that protect your home.  If you live in a damp climate and need a new roof, algae resistant shingles are available.

You may notice curling shingles or ones that are bent or twisted.  This can be caused by poor ventilation or because the original work crew did not fasten the shingles correctly.  If you have missing shingles they may have been improperly fastened when they were installed or loosened by high winds.  Many times you can just replace those shingles rather than invest in a new roof.

If you have a new roof you might notice fine grains, like sandpaper grit, coming out of your downspouts after a rain.  This is normal, but if your roof is older it may mean your roof is failing.  You might also notice buckling, which might appear as a raised line on the roof when viewed from the ground.  Buckling can be caused by felt backing that is not properly applied or by a lack of ventilation.

Look at your ceilings, too.  Water spots usually mean your roof is leaking.  Look in your attic, if you have one, to see if you can spot the leak.  If you’re lucky the leak might be caused by damaged flashing around the chimney but if not you may need a new roof. Humans can have symptoms of a failing roof, too.  If you or your family has a lot of colds or chronic fatigue it may be due to inhaling mold spores from a failing roof.  If you notice any of these signs and symptoms of a failing roof, we at Advanced Roofing Ontario will be happy to inspect it and offer you a free estimate on repairs or replacement.
